In the lead-up to the 2020/21 academic year, the School of Engineering at Newcastle University were undergoing some changes to their Undergraduate delivery, looking to combine four programmes – Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Marine Engineering – into one ‘Flexible Stage One’, where Engineering students gain a good overall foundation before specialising during Stage 2.

In order to accommodate the increased numbers of students, the school planned to move to a more blended learning delivery, allowing for greater flexibility in delivering lectures and lab-based activities. This also coincided with a switch to an improved VLE platform, which would enable the use of online tools to assist with remote delivery.

The arrival of the pandemic meant that changes to the plan were necessary, as teaching would have to move fully online. This meant adjustments, to labs in particular, to enable students to still meet the learning objectives by completing labs remotely. In this webinar, there will be discussed how these labs can be created and delivered: from how they were structured in a new VLE, to the different methods used to enable students to complete the labs from home.
